The Medical Council of India (MCI), will initiate inspection of 5 PG courses at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam once the final examination of the college starts towards the end of the week.

The institution will be assessed against the facilities it offers. The college was granted permission to start the courses under the state government's undertaking that the infrastructure for them would be ready by the time the Ist batch appeared for their final examinations.

The PG courses to be inspected had come the college's way after having been in existence for 14 years. This had also led to the delay in up gradation of the college to a regular medical college with full fledged departments.

The college despite the government creating additional posts, faces faculty shortage. The college has 11 post graduate seats; two each in Microbiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, and paediatrics and three in Internal Medicine.

The college would take two years to get its infrastructure for super specialty courses ready; which is essential for running any Post graduate program in the collegereports Hindu.

It was in December 2013 that the government took over the college from the Co-operation Department.
