Kerala: Cancelled admissions to be regularised through Ordinance

Thiruvananthapuram:150 admissions at Kannur Medical College found irregular by the Admission Supervisory Committee (ASC) and cancelled by the apex court are going to be regularized through an ordinance to be introduced by the Central Government. The new move is likely to call for severe criticism.

If the ordinance is successfully implemented, it is likely to regularize other college medical seat admissions, which were earlier set aside by the ASC.

There is a voice of dissent being heard in government circles on whether the ordinance will stand legal scrutiny.

The 150 admission cancellations for 2016-17 to Kannur Medical College at Ancharakandi had been done by Justice James Committee for fee regulation when it found the admissions to be irregular and its decision was upheld by the High Court and later the apex court as well.

On Wednesday, the cabinet sent a recommendation to the Governor to promulgate an ordinance to facilitate further studies of the students. The decision to introduce the ordinance came in response to the students and parents approaching the government on the issue.

With the introduction of the ordinance, the students will have to file fresh applications through the university. Cancelled admissions to 11 seats at Malabar Medical College, 8 seats at Al Azhar Medical College, Thodupuzha, and 39 seats in Karuna Medical College, Palakkad may also benefit.

Health Department sources are of the view that the new ordinance may not undergo legal scrutiny either reports TNIE.
