Kerala: Burning of waste on premises denied by GMC Ernakulam

Kochi: The local population living around the Government Medical College, (GMC) Ernakulam, has alleged that the college authorities are burning wastes inside the campus, as the incinerator at the institution has been out of order for the past six months.


The College Principal, VK Sreekala refuting the allegation said that food wastes were being given away to a pig farm, while medical waste was being carried away by IMAGE for the past six months at a cost of Rs.3.5 per bed, per day. A contract for taking away the plastic waste generated on the college premises, had also been given away, she added.


Ms. Sreekala said an incinerator was under construction and till it became functional, the present arrangement would continue.


Dr. Sreekala denied knowledge of any waste being burnt on the college premises.


It was alleged that garbage, including plastic waste, was being burnt at the area earmarked for the Cochin Cancer Research Center, reported the Hindu.
