Kerala: 18 medical students suspended for indisciplinary acts at GMC

Thiruvananthapuram: Eighteen students of the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram have been suspended based on the report of an eight member inquiry committee appointed by the College Committee of Management, which found all guilty of serious disciplinary violations. The in disciplinary conduct of the students the report stated affected the functioning of the college.The students held guilty belong to the to 2012, 2013, and 2014 MBBS batches and include 10 girls.

The in disciplinary acts mentioned in the report pertain to the student clashes that took place following the Arts Festival at the college between September 28-30, over results of events announced. What actually led to a violent eruption was a facebook post put up by the 2014 batch student, who was hounded by the 2012 batch in the hostel in an attempt to settle scores. The police arrested two students in this regard as it is alleged that they tried to beat him up. It is also claimed that some 2012 batch students entered the hostel with the intention to beat up some 2014 batch students, prior to this incident. The arrest of two students by the police had many others marching to the police station. This led to the principal, staff adviser and men’s hostel warden intervene in the issue and have the two arrested be let off without any criminal charges imposed.

However, the ruckus did not settle with this as later some of them got drunk and created serious trouble in the hostel. It is believed a few girl students of the 2014 batch joined the boys and pandemonium was created on the premises.According to Medical College CI C Binukumar, despite the matter getting resolved at the police station, the students clashed again.

Following this in disciplinary act, police was called in. An emergency meeting of College Committee of management was called on Sunday, that appointed an inquiry committee constituting Heads of Departments to file their report of the incident.
