Bengaluru: Criminal proceedings have been initiated by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), against Dr. Maheshbabu, an ENT Professor at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and his daughter, following a departmental inquiry. This comes as punishment for the two for having been hand in glove in providing a fake disability certificate for the daughter in order to gain a medical seat for her in the diabled quota category.

A senior official of the Medical Education Department confirming the move to the New Indian Express said: “Following the inquiry report submitted by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), we have processed the file asking the director of BMC to initiate criminal proceedings against both father and daughter.”
“A departmental inquiry too will be conducted and criminal procedure will be initiated immediately,” the official also added.

The academic year 2012 (CET 2012), saw Dr Maheshbabu, an ENT professor at BMC, help his daughter procure a government quota medical seat under physically challenged quota by providing her with a fake certificate using his good offices and proclaiming the candidate to be deaf. The fake document helped the girl candidate get a seat at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bengaluru.

However, the exercise was soon brought to light after the admission process was completed under CET 2012, and the KEA received a complaint against both professor and his daughter, for having submitted false documents.

Five years hence the KEA has been able to verify the falsity of certification and has withdrawn the allotted seat from the candidate.

The Indian Express report dated April 12 mentioned the cancellation and withdrawal. The girl was in her final year, when the KEA struck.

The case: Dr Maheshbabu having used his position as professor ENT, BMC and a panelist in the team of doctors appointed by the medical education department to verify documents under the quota allegedly helped his daughter, who was physically fit, procure a fake certificate saying she was deaf.

The candidate in question managed to get a physically handicapped quota seat.

Interestingly, doctors whose children are quota claimants are not allowed to be on the document verifying panel.

The racket of fake certification :

The Administrative Officer CET 2012, S P Kulkarni had faced allegations for helping candidates in the submission of fake certification for granting of medical admissions. During CET 2013, the scam surfaced revealing over 150 students to have submitted a fake certification under rural, physically handicapped and SC/ST quotas. An inquiry conducted proved the allegations against Mr. Kulkarni to be true, leading to his suspension reports TNIE.
