Bengaluru: Sixty students of Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Tumakuru have finally been allotted MBBS seats in other colleges. They were denied admissions last year by the government following de-recognition of Shridevi by Medical Council of India (MCI).However, an academic session stands lost to them.

The Supreme Court had kept their admissions in discontinuance following a legal battle between the college and MCI last year, said Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil .

Earlier on, the MCI ‘s ruling that no admissions be done in the college for 2015-16 due to infrastructural shortcomings was set aside by the college, which challenged the body in the Karnataka High Court and getting permission, went ahead with admitting students.

The Karnataka Examinations Authority based on the court’s nod to the college allocated 60 seats for MBBS, 60 for the CET quota, 60 under the COMED K quota and another 30 for Management for the academic session 2015-16.

However, the college’s attempts to go ahead with the academic session came falling apart when the MCI came a visiting, second time in January 2015 to discover infrastructural deficiencies. The college hastened to make up for the drawbacks and approached the Ministry of Health for permission to commence session. The ministry on its part asked the MCI to condone; however, to no avail this time.

The college again approached the Karnataka High Court and obtained an interim order for admissions for the year 2015-16. The MCI did not sit quiet on the act and went to court questioning this act of admission. The Supreme Court ordered suspension of classes. According to the Principal S.D. Desai: “We acted according to the court order. We are helpless.” The matter will come up for hearing again before the Supreme Court on March 1, he said.
