Karnataka: Second GMC Bengaluru to be established in 2 years; 2016-17 to see 450 more MBBS seats in existing GMCs
Karnataka: A new GMC Bengaluru is expected to be established in two years. The medical college will be the second GMC in the city and will be set up inside the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital campus. In addition, 2016-17 almost 450 additional seats will be provided by GMCs in Madikeri, Karwar and Chamarajanagar.
The new GMC project is likely to be completed by 2018, to offer 150 MBBS seats in addition to the government quota. The earlier estimated cost for the project was Rs 170 crore; however, now the project cost has risen to Rs 218 crore. In addition, the project envisages inclusion of a nursing college to offer 17 courses in paramedics. The government also has an ambition plan to have a college in every district.
The medical education department has given its approval on the new GMC Bengaluru and now an approval for a final go-ahead is pending from the government. Government will give the final permission to float the tender and also approve the revision in the estimated cost.
Medical education minister Sharan Prakash Patil implied that the new building inside the Bowring hospital premise will occupy a space of 10-acre plot. This is in tune with MCI norms.
Dr KS Manjunath, special officer, Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, said to TOI that the college would stand out for its teaching. "It should not become another medical college that manufactures doctors. Medical colleges do not impart skilled training and that's what we want to excel in. Importance will be given to research with a dedicated team," he said. The college will have a special wing to train medical faculty.
Dr Manjunath in addition implied that the new GMC will also be focusing on family medicine to attend to healthcare needs of people of all ages. The intention is to create a revival of family physicians, which helps in detection of many conditions before it gets too complicated. The medical college hospital will also have an additional wing for yoga, ayurveda and homeopathy specialists.
The medical college building is to be set up at the old VVIP block after demolishing it. The existing obstetrics outpatient unit inside the building is to be shifted to Sir Haji Ismail Gosha hospital.
The proposal presented to the government consists of two exclusive floors for advanced training and research. The college is also expected to in-house a medical and surgical skill development centre and other important medical units.
