Karnataka: Patil asks for increase in super speciality and MD clinical courses
Bengaluru: Medical Education Minister,Sharanprakash Patil, has requested the Medical Council of India (MCI), to increase seat quota for super speciality and clinical post graduate courses. This he stated, keeping in mind the popularity of these courses with the students applying to medical colleges for admission.
Talking to the press Mr. Patil said, “I have requested the MCI to enhance the number of seats for these courses. Currently, there is a dearth of specialists in all community health centres. If priority is given to these courses, the problem will be addressed.”
Speaking about declining interest of students in peri & para clinical, as well as dental courses Mr. Patil revealed that a lot of seats continued to stay vacant and wasted after the admission processes were complete. Citing the example of dentistry, the Medical Education Minister said the course had not found any takers in the last three or four years even in private institutions. ”
This year, the state quota for dental seats is 887 seats, while the quota under National Eligibility -cum-Entrance Test is 645 seats.
Talking about dental fee structures the minister said while the government seat costed Rs. 45,000, the comed-K costs Rs. 3.9 lac. According to him, there were 3,127 MBBS seats under the government quota, 1,370 seats under NEET and 1,500 to 1,700 seats in deemed varsities. He also spoke about Public Relation Officers being appointed in various hospitals this year.
