Karnataka decides three more GMCs, now in Udupi, Ramanagaram, Bengaluru Rural districts
Udupi: The Directorate of Medical Education has decided to build three new government medical colleges in Udupi, Ramanagaram and Bengaluru Rural districts.
With this move, the state of Karnataka which has the highest number of medical colleges in the country is slowly moving to have medical colleges in each district of the state.
As per July 2019 data, the state has 9145 MBBS seats across 59 Medical colleges. Of these, 2800 MBBS seats are in 19 government medical colleges while 6345 MBBS seats are allotted to 40 private medical institutes.
Medical dialogues team had recently reported that earlier this year, the Karnataka government had sent a proposal to the centre to approve the institutes situated six different districts. The state had applied for six new medical colleges in Chikkamagalur, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Haveri, Yadgir and Bagalkote. Of these, 3 received the centre's approval recently- Chikkamagaluru, Haveri and Yadgiri, according to a notification issued on October 23, 2019. These medical colleges will be set up under the Centrally-sponsored Scheme.
These colleges will add 600 more medical seats to the state from the same academic year.
Now Directorate of Medical Education has decided to build three new government medical colleges in Udupi, Ramanagaram and Bengaluru Rural districts. According to sources in the department, these colleges may commence admissions from the 2021-22 academic years.
Except in Udupi, Ramanagaram and Bengaluru Rural districts, all other districts have at least one State or Union government-run medical colleges reports UNI. The move to set up medical colleges in these three districts is to mitigate this problem, confirmed Deputy Chief Minister and Medical Education Minister Dr C N Ashwath Narayan.
