Karnataka applies to MCI for 450 additional MBBS seats
Bengaluru: To get a major boon in the medical education sector, the state has applied to the Medical Council of India (MCI) for 450 additional MBBS seats for the upcoming academic year.
According to a recent media report, the Medical Education Department has requested to the Medical Council of India for the enhancement of MBBS seats at Mysore, Hubballi and Hassan Medical Colleges mentioning that these medical colleges were academically doing well.
In addition, the recently established medical college in the premises of Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru was permitted 150 seats which will start from the academic year 2019-20. Therefore, in total the state is expecting 450 additional MBBS seats this year.
Informing about the same, an official from the Medical Education Department confirmed that these medical colleges fulfil all requirements laid down by the MCI and therefore all of them received a nod for an additional 100 seats for each college. These medical colleges currently have an intake of 100 more MBBS seats.

The MCI inspection is being conducted which will expectedly get over soon. Upon completion of the inquiry, the department will get clarity on the status of seats by the end of May or the first week of June, reports the Deccan Herald.
Recently, few Medical Colleges in the state received the nod of the Apex Medical Council for the enhancement of seats.
The Director, Department of Medical Education, Dr P G Girish told the daily, "This year, we are hoping to get approval from the central agencies for the enhancement of seats. As the Bangalore Medical College already has an intake of 250 students, we did not request for any more at BMC. However, at Hubballi, Mysore and Hassan colleges we could have more seats."
Some of the newly set up government medical colleges are not meeting criteria laid down by the MCI and may require some time to improve the infrastructure. Hence, we have not sought more seats at the newly set up colleges, adds the Deccan Herald.
