Karnataka: 8th convocation of JSS University held at JSS Medical College

Mysore: Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala addressing a gathering at the eighth convocation of Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University at JSS Medical College, here, on Wednesday, said that medicine is ‘a noble, service-oriented profession’ and doctors should work with humanity.


"While businessmen do business to make money, the intent of the medical profession is service, not the business. The graduates and doctors should understand the difference between business and profession. The new graduates should follow the oath taken during the convocation ceremony," he added.


Speaking about prospects of research in the country, Governor, Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala added, "The country has good intellectual resources that can beat the USA. We need to utilize it. The new graduates should take up research work while practicing medicine."

"There are good opportunities to conduct research, finding medicines for AIDS, cancer, etc. To involve in research, one should have the courage and in-depth knowledge," Vala added.

Vice-chancellor B Suresh also present at the convocation spoke of the university having submitted 64 research project proposals during the academic year 2016-17.


He further revealed that the university ‘s effort towards seeking external funding had been successful as approximately Rs 317.75 lakh for 14 projects, from various national funding agencies had been raised.


In addition, the Vice-Chancellor revealed that the varsity has published 713 scientific research publications, besides filing for six patents, with two having been granted already. The varsity he revealed has also recognized 127 faculties as research supervisors in different disciplines and 284 students have been registered for Ph.D. till now, he informed.


1,274 students were conferred the degrees and diplomas in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Management Studies at the convocation.


Of these, 22 candidates were awarded Doctorates of Philosophy, 5 candidates conferred the Doctorate in Medicine and 2 candidates received an MPhil degree, reports Deccan Herald.


Outstanding performance in academics saw 40 students receive 56 medals and awards.
