Trichy: The Medical Council of India(MCI), conducted its annual inspection to assess the quality of education being imparted at the KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVGMC) attached to the Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital (MGMGH), on Tuesday.

The three-member team sent by the Council looked into the provisions made available by the institution in the imparting of theoretical and practical teaching to all batches of MBBS students.

The Council has been inspecting the college every year, ever since its seat strength was increased from a 100 to 150 in 2013-14, by the Chief Minister, J Jayalalitha.

The KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVGMC) has been having a tough time for the past 5 years due to faculty shortcomings and the resultant delay in recognition. The state government’s intervention on the issue of recognition helped the college get its recognition, a few years ago.

The Council had to repeatedly carry out a headcount to ensure that the required number of faculty were actually teaching at the college hospital. A source told the TOI that luckily the institution did manage to clear the headcount at the inspection conducted this time by the MCI.

According to Dean, G Anitha, the college neither lacked teaching manpower or hospital practice, after doctor appointments done recently. The current inspection is the 2nd one, at an interval of 10 days, with the first done by a two-member team on February 22nd, involving practical examination check for the final year batch.

According to a source, the present inspection may continue for another day at KAPVGMC, lasting until Wednesday.
