Trichy: The Medical Council of India’s renewal of recognition to KAP Viswanatham government medical college (KAPVGMC) for the academic year 2017-18 will make admissions to the it a smooth affair. The government hospital located in the central part of the state was recently granted approval by the MCI’s executive committee at a meeting held in New Delhi on October 10, 2016.

"The executive committee of the council considered the assessment report of the two-day visit on August 30 and 31, 2016 and decided to recommend to the central government to renew the permission for admission of the fifth batch of MBBS students against the increased intake from 100-150 for the academic year 2017-8 in respect of KAP Viswanatham government medical college, Trichy," read the EC meeting minutes .

Upgraded to a 150 seats from the 100 at its inception in 1997, by Jayalalithaa for the academic year 2013-14, the college and the attached government hospital had been granted approval after an MCI check for bed strength, faculty and other facilities. The MCI will now visit the college to check facilities for five years from the date of inclusion of the additional seats.

In all probability it was the first time that the college got its MCI approval without any queries about discrepancy of faculty and facility. "The MCI team was satisfied with all the facilities in our college which were necessary for medical education. We have enough strength of faculty to ensure quality education to the students. With the approval from MCI, our college has the permission to admit the additional 50 students for the fifth batch, " Dean, KAPVGMC, Dr S Mary Lilly told TOI on Thursday.

She felt that the students were likely to get good exposure with the hospital enjoying 1300 inpatient strength and a footfall of 3000 outpatients on a daily basis. She also spoke about the faculty increase in all the 21 departments over a period of time .

It would be appropriate to mention here that the KAPVGMC was facing trouble in getting renewal approval every time as the MCI pointed at several deficiencies including shortage of faculty.
