Jaipur: The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Jodhpur Rajasthan, one of the six new AIIMS set up by the central government in the country, seems to have failed to attract quality manpower. Of the 305 posts sanctioned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for faculty, a mere 99 have been filled so far.

The central government has set up AIIMS in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh and Jodhpur.

Senior resident posts numbering 327, have seen a mere 105 take on positions, while 301 junior resident posts haven't gone beyond 84 appointments.

Reason for faculty shortage has been assigned to lack of resource and infrastructure. Jodhpur is also not connected to other major cities by air, except for the capital and Mumbai, which has been cited as another reason for faculty not joining.

AIIMS officials however, also revealed that recruitments at Jodhpur AIIMS are need based; keeping in mind additional services and facilities planned at the hospital. Vacant faculty posts are being advertised regularly by the institute, the sources added.

"We have not been able to fill up all advertised positions," said Manish Srivastava, Administrative Officer. He said that the faculty appointment selection had recently ended and the matter has been sent to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for their approval. "It will be clear how many positions will be filled only after we get their approval," Srivastava told HT.

According to an official, a separate Standing Selection Committees (SSCs) has been formed for AIIMS, Jodhpur, to fill up vacancies in earnest.

In order to attract quality teaching staff, various measures have been taken up said AIIMS officials. The upper age limit for direct recruitment for posts of professor and additional professor has been raised from 50 to 58 years.

Contract basis faculty appointments, as a stop-gap arrangement are also being made. The ratio of teachers to students has been revised from 1:1 to 1:2 for all MD/MS disciplines and 1:1 to 1:3 in subjects like surgical oncology, forensic medicine, radiotherapy, medical oncology, anesthesiology, and psychiatry.
