JIPMER organises CME programme

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) conducted a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme in Neuroradiology.


According to an official statement, the CME was held focusing on the current trends and need in Neuroradiology. Eminent faculties including Dr NK Mishra AIIMS New Delhi, Dr Kesavadas from Sree ChitraTirunal Institute of Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST), Dr KG Srinivasan from Madurai, Dr R Lakshminarasimhan (Neurology) from Madras Medical College, Dr VR Roopesh Kumar (Neurosurgery) from SIMS Chennai and Dr Sabhesan (Psychiatry) from Madurai among others addressed the CME.


Inaugurating the CME, JIPMER Director, Dr Parija highlighted the importance of Radiological investigations in diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and specially the neuro-imaging in ruling out infectious diseases like tuberculoma.


He said that JIPMER is continuously organising CMEs on comprehensive aspects of various diagnostic methods, treatment modalities and research purview to update and deliver quality patient care services and research work. He commended the neuro-rehabilitation services in JIPMER.


He applauded the multi-disciplinary coordination and care in JIPMER. He concluded saying that the radiological investigations in JIPMER are highly refined and JIPMER could offer poor patients the High-end investigations free of cost.


Dr RP Swaminathan, Dean (Academic) in his address said that JIPMER will be starting Post-Doctoral Fellowship courses in Stroke Management and Advanced Imaging in the coming year; and MD in Interventional Radiology will also begin shortly.


Dr J Balachander Medical Superintendent, JIPMER in his felicitation address acknowledged the tremendous technology advancement in Neuro-Imaging like BOLD-Blood-oxygen-level dependent (BOLD is a method used in functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to observe different areas of the brain or other organs, which are found to be active at any given time).


Dr Sunil Narayan, Professor-Neurology briefed the growth of neuro-imaging in the last two decades in diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. He mentioned the newer advances in neuro-imaging in diagnosing complicated diseases and the role of experimental imaging in research purposes to understand the dysfunctions and disorders.


Dr Nagaraj, Addl Professor & Head of Radio-diagnosis said that the Neuroradiology is an established subspecialty in Radiology involving both diagnostic and interventional aspects. Neuroradiology exists as separate department in institutes like AIIMS New Delhi and NIMHANS Bangalore.


Patients with neurological (brain & spine) disorders are investigated using radiological modalities like Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) and it involves close involvement of treating neurologist and neurosurgeon with the radiologist.


He added saying that the advanced techniques have emerged under CT/MRI like CT/MR Angiography, CT/MR Perfusion studies, MR Spectroscopy, functional MRI to evaluate the diseases of the brain. Neuro-Interventional treatment has emerged in stroke, other vascular diseases and even pre-operative tumor embolization to reduce vascularity (blood supply).
