JIPMER makes debut with patent filing, says eight more to follow
Puducherry:The research wing of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), Puducherry has filed its first maiden patent application on Friday, June 22nd.There are eight others to follow in a phased pattern.
An important credit for this new innovative research upsurge at the institute goes to SC Parija, the new face, who joined the institute as Director, six months ago.Having assumed charge, Parija immediately established an intellectual property rights cell and unfolded a privileged IPR policy to familiarize faculty members and students on the process of filing patents.
JIPMER has also set up an 'innovation unit' to encourage and motivate faculty members and students to undertake more research projects and file patents on their research findings.Faculty was also sent for sensitization programmes and workshops which resulted in they responding positively and submitting their research findings for filing patents.
JIPMER's research initiative leading to patent filing on the part of the faculty and students led to a joyous Director congratulating his team and announcing that JIPMER would now partner with industries in designing and bringing out treatment modalities for better patient care, as well as diagnostic kits.
"Jipmer will continue to undertake major research projects and apply for patents in the field of medicine as a part of its contribution towards 'Make in India' concept promoted by Prime Minister," said Parija.
The stature granted to Jipmer by the Union Health Ministry is one on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh in 2008. The institute was dedicated to the nation by President Abdul Kalam in October, 2008.
Set up by the French government in 1823 and renamed as Jipmer in 1964 after Puducherry merged with the Indian union, the research initiative had prior to this not filed any patents.Though its contribution to research having been phenomenal for the last 50 years.
