JIPMER harvest organs from brain dead

Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here harvested organs and tissues from a brain-dead donor and transplanted them in patients with Kidney and liver failure on January 18.


According to a Jipmer release on Saturday, On January 16 one Suresh (25) of Puducherry, while riding his two-wheeler, met with an accident near Madhagadipet, in Valavanur Police station limits. He sustained a severe head injury and after first aid provided at ManakulaVinayagar Medical College hospital, he was referred to JIPMER for further treatment.


He was admitted in a grave condition and was under treatment for his head injury. However, his condition did not improve and he was found to have severe irreversible brain damage. He was determined to be brain dead by the concerned experts and the same was conveyed to Suresh's family.


Dr SreejithParameswaran, Nodal Officer, NOTTO, JIPMER said that despite the unfortunate situation, upon being informed about the condition of Mr Suresh and the possibility of organ donation, his family members came forward to donate organs as they felt that it would help others to live; otherwise the organs may go waste.
Consent for organ donation was given by his brothers Mr Rajiv and Mr Ramesh and by his Mother Ms.Matcha Gandhi.


As it was a medico-legal case, the concerned police station was intimated and the formal request for the inquest was made, to allow organ harvesting. Mr Balraman, Sub-Inspector of Police, Valavanur Police station readily came to JIPMER and conducted an inquest and completed other medico-legal formalities, thus facilitating the organ donation process.


Both Kidneys, Liver and both Corneas (eyes) were harvested and were transplanted to needy patients in JIPMER Hospital on January 18 itself.
