JIPMER conducts multi-organ harvesting
Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) recently undertook multi-organ harvesting from a brain dead donor.
According to JIPMER release, the organs and tissues harvested included kidneys, heart, and corneas.
On January 1, a 36-year, old man, a daily-wage earner, travelling on a two-wheeler, met with an accident.
He sustained a severe head injury and was initially treated at Sankarpuram Government Hospital and Mundiyambakkam Government Hospital.
He was then referred to JIPMER and was admitted in a grave condition.

Despite treatment, his condition did not improve and he was determined to be brain dead by the experts.
On learning this, in spite of their profound grief, his family members came forward to donate his organs to help others with organ failure to lead a better life. His brothers gave consent for organ donation.
Being a medico-legal case, the concerned police station was requested for an expedited inquest, to allow organ harvesting.
Mr Ravi, Sub-Inspector of Police, came to JIPMER, and completed the inquest and other medico-legal formalities, facilitating the organ donation process. Heart, both kidneys and corneas were harvested. The kidneys and corneas were transplanted to needy patients on January 4 itself, and the heart was sent to Chennai for transplantation on one patient in coordination with the Transplant Authority of Tamilnadu (TRANSTAN), Chennai.

JIPMER which includes a tertiary care referral hospital is an Institution of National Importance (an autonomous body) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The medical institution was established in the year 1823 by the French Government but was converted into Dhanvantari Medical College at the time of de facto transfer of Pondicherry to Government of India. This Medical College was later upgraded into Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research.
