Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here conducted Jipmer Integrated Pharmacogenomics Programme (JIPP) 2019 on November 23.

Jipmer Director Dr. Rakesh Aggarwal, inaugurated the JIPP-2019 program “Indo-Swiss Symposium on Advances in Pharmacogenomics Strategies for implementation of Personalized Medicine“, a Jipmer release said here on Tuesday.

The concepts of research methodology and hands-on training in molecular biology techniques were also part of the JIPP program. This training program is essential for clinicians and Healthcare Professionals to understand the concepts of Pharmacogenomics which help in personalized drug treatment.

‘Pharmacogenomics’ is the science that associates the genetic make-up of an individual with drug metabolism and treatment response. This is a contemporary science that promises a new era of personalized medicine’. The concept of Pharmacogenomics stems from the idea that one drug doesn’t fit all.

Instead of being exposed to the ‘trial and error’ prescribing of today, all it takes is one DNA test to analyze one’s genes that code for drug-metabolizing enzymes. One could do away with the adverse drug reactions, or non-response, and there is no accounting for the cost-effectiveness in the long run.

Knowing the patient genetic constitution also enables the physician to prescribe more confidently. In a real-life setting, the clinical relevance of Pharmacogenomics spans the treatment of many common diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, thromboembolic disorders and various cancers, the release said.
