JIPMER completes 50th Cochlear implant
Puducherry: The Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has successfully completed 50 cochlear implants on 27th of November to a 12-year-old girl child with profound deafness following a degenerative neural disease.
According to the statement released by the medical Institute on Thursday, the Cochlear implant is an electronic device that is surgically inserted into the ear in profoundly deaf people.
In children born deaf, if the implant is done before the age of four the children will grow up to also have normal speech apart from hearing.
The Cochlear implant programme was initiated in the year 2015 by the Department of ENT under the guidance of Dr Mohan Kameshwaran.
The first implant was done on 27th July 2015. Thereafter the ENT team has taken on the venture and has successfully completed 50 cochlear implants as on 27th Nov 2018.
