Jipmer celebrates first anniversary of cadaveric hand transplantation

Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has recently celebrated the 'first Anniversary of Cadaveric (brain dead) hand transplantation.

According to a Jipmer release, both (bilateral) hands were harvested from a brain-dead (cadaveric) patient and were transplanted to another patient who had lost his both hands following electric burn injury. The programme was organized by Department of Plastic Surgery.

During the programme families of both donor & recipient were felicitated by Director JIPMER. The programme was attended by members of team involved in transplantation, faculty, staff & students.

Being first cadaveric bilateral hand transplantation of the country in a Government Institute, JIPMER became famous globally and received acclamation from various organizations of India and world. The programme was telecasted live by Department of IT Wing & Telemedicine using National Knowledge Network (NKN) connectivity to entire nation and world.
