Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) here has started a Critical Care Unit (CCU).

According to a Jipmer release, its director Dr.S.Vivekanandam inaugurated the state-of-the-art CCU on Thursday.

Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ashok Badhe along with senior professors of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Professor Hemavathi Balachander and Professor Pankaj Kundra were present on the occasion.

The 14-bedded unit is equipped with advanced hemodynamic monitors, ventilators, continuous renal replacement therapy and other facilities to provide the highest level of care for critically ill patients.

Dr. Sandeep Mishra, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, said that this upgrade was planned as the existing capacity of the 12-bed CCU was inadequate to meet the increasing demands of the hospital. This facility will enhance the care of trauma patients, severe infections, post-operative care following complex operations, and for patients with multiple medical conditions.

It will also serve the needs of other high dependency areas in the hospital and support stepping up of care when necessary. In addition to providing clinical services, this unit will also enable training in critical care for doctors' (MD Anaesthesiology, Post-Doctoral Fellowship & DM in Critical Care) and nurses, the release said.
