Ranchi: A first year PG student of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has been allegedly assaulted by an unidentified man on the hospital campus. The student was on her way from the girl's hostel to the hospital, for a night shift at the emergency ward when the incident happened. Security arrangements have come under a cloud, after this incident.

According to the girl’s account to the Sadar DSP, Vikas Chandra Srivastava and Acting Director, RIMS, Dr. RK Srivastava, she was assaulted by a well dressed young man in the back alley, which is the short route, between the hostel and hospital. The alleged assault took place around 9.10 PM according to her.

The scuffle that ensued had her in shreds in a minute and the young man moved away, when she started to shout for help.

Though no formal complaint was lodged at the Bariatu police station, 120 girls staged a protest outside the Director’s office, demanding that security be tightened in the area. The protesting girls forwarded there demands to the DSP and the Acting Director of the college.

The Sadar DSP took account of the situation. He observed, that the 250 meter alley had no lights.

The student reaction to the incident was of anger and they decided to boycott the OPD the next day. The RIMS management has promised intervention and tightening of security at the hosptial

This is the second incident on campus, the first being a incident of ragging that took place in 2015; leading to camera installations in the hospital and hostel area. This time the police outpost on campus has come under a barrage of questioning. The incident took place barely 300 meters away from a police outpost on the campus.

While Srivastava chose to remain silent, Mr. Chandra responded by saying patrolling would be intensified between 6 pm and 9 pm. Additional pickets would be stationed, as an attempt to increase security of the hos tellers.
