Ranchi: To provide the Organ transplant Facilities to the state population, the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) is planning to Establish Organ transplant surgery Unit to conduct Organ transplant Surgeries soon.

The governing body of Rims had on May 19 approved a proposal to start body donation, under which people could pledge to donate their organs to the institute. Now, the state's premier medical institute is mulling to set up organ transplant infrastructure by the year-end.

Comparing the number of organ transplant surgeries with other countries,a study conducted in 2012, showed that, only 5,000 kidneys, 1,000 livers and 15 hearts are transplanted in India .

Speaking with the TOI, RIMS acting director Dr R K Srivastava said, "The hospital is simultaneously working with other hospitals outside Jharkhand to create a bigger pool of donors before the service is made operational."

However, talking about their plans to furnish the Organ transplant surgical unit, Dr srivastava said, that to start an organ transplant unit will require more funds to ensure logistical support such as vehicles that will rush to the deceased's homes and collect organs.

Along with that, the hospital management also has plans to set up a state body for organ and tissue transplant organisation under NOTTO, talks for which are to be taken up in the scheduled meeting.

Although a final nod for the proposal is awaited from health minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi, Rims authorities have begun preparations to get itself registered with New Delhi-based National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO). A team of doctors from Rims is expected to visit the national capital for an initial round of discussion.

NOTTO's clearance will enable Rims to begin organ and tissue transplants.
