Jailed Former Principal of BRD Medical College admitted in a Lucknow hospital

Lucknow: Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College's Former Principal, Dr Rajiv Mishra, who had been jailed for the last 8 months after tragedy struck 30 children in 2017 has been admitted to the Lucknow's Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS)


Dr Mishra, a patient of Liver Cirrhosis had his plea for bail rejected a week ago by the High Court. Dr. Mishra was admitted to the Lucknow facility when his condition deteriorated this Saturday. His wife a co-accused in the college tragedy is also in the Gorakhpur Jail.

Director, RMLIMS, Prof Deepak Malviya, told TOI "He is recuperating at the institute, but his liver cirrhosis can't be treated and so his health gets affected often. We have kept him under observation and decision to discharge him will be taken accordingly, perhaps in two or three days."


Dr. Mishra's bail plea was rejected by the Allahabad high court on May 1. Dr Mishra, one of the nine accused in the death of several children due to alleged disruption of oxygen supply at the hospital last year, has been charged under sections 409 (criminal conspiracy), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 120B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) besides section 7/13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.


However, two others accused in the child tragedy case, Manish Bhandari and Dr Kafeel Khan, have been given a bail by the Supreme Court (SC) and High Court, respectively. Manish Bhandari, the owner of Pushpa Sales, the supplier of oxygen cylinders to the medical college had stopped the supply of oxygen to the college due to nonpayment of dues got himself a bail through the supreme court.

While Dr Kafeel Khan, a lecturer at BRD Medical College's paediatrics department, was first hailed a hero for saving children dying in the encephalitis ward of the hospital, (between August 10 and August 12), but later declared a villain and an accused in the case.
