Issue of Conducting biannual NEET exam raised in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: With the Winter session of parliament on, the conduct of National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test, UG (NEET), the gateway to the medical profession in the country, became a topic of discussion, with the Member of Parliament raising questions in this regard.


The questions were raised by Rajya Sabha member Shri K R Arjunan who asked the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey about the plan of government on new biannual NEET, its mode as well as the agency that is going to conduct the exam




  • whether it is a fact that Government will go ahead with the new biannual NEET, especially the provision of eight different time slots and as many different question papers with different difficulty levels, if so, the details thereof;

  • whether it is also a fact that the totally online test will be heavily loaded against students from rural and poor backgrounds; and

  • whether Government is considering to entrust the job of conducting NEET to an external agency?


Giving a written reply to all these questions, the Minister of State- Health Shri Choubey clarified that NEET will be currently conducted in a single offline session in pen and paper mode. He added that from this year NTA will conduct NEET




"The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) till 2018. Now, from 2019 onwards, it will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organization established to conduct entrance examinations for higher educational institutions in the country."


It was also clarified that NEET (UG) – 2019 will be a single offline examination and will be conducted in pen and paper mode.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that till last academic year CBSE used to conduct NEET but now from 2019, NEET will be conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency.

On the issue of the examination being conducted online, the NTA had clarified that NEET will be conducted in pen and paper mode only.
