IGMCRI Puducherry issued notice for polluting lake

Puducherry: The Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI) has been slapped with a notice by the Puducherry Pollution Control Committee (PPCC) for discharging untreated effluents into a water body in the Union territory.


It has been stated by the PPCC authorities that the medical college has been discharging untreated effluents into the Kanagan Lake polluting the water body.


The Committee Member Secretary R Smitha, also Director (Science, Technology and Environment), stated, “77 of the 78 industries and institutions treat their effluents properly before discharging while the lone government medical college is the only institution that has been discharging untreated effluents.”


To make sure this negligence doesn’t take its course again, Committee Member Secretary informed Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi about certain initiatives that had been undertaken by the committee to prevent the medical college pollute the lake.


The Secretary informed the Lieutenant Governor about a recent one-to-one meeting where the committee had instructed the government society, under which the medical college functions, to install an effluent treatment plant so that untreated matter doesn’t go in the lake while miserably polluting it.


For this purpose, the society has been instructed to install the facility at the medical college within a stipulated time given by the committee herein.


Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, the Lieutenant Governor has decided to hold a meeting with the concerned officials including the secretaries to the government in order to initiate appropriate efforts to prevent the medical college from discharging untreated effluents into the water body, reports TOI.
