IGMC Simla: 4 Final Year MBBS students suspended for beating up Classmate in drunken state

Shimla: Ragging menace continues at the largest medical institute running in Himachal Pradesh, Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) as the institute is now reported to have suspended four final year MBBS students for beating a classmate allegedly in an inebriated state.


Just a month ago, the institute was in headlines for ragging of first-year medicos at a freshers’ party. After the college administration got a video clip of the incident, four second-year MBBS students were suspended from the medical college hostel.


Now, as per a recent report by Punjab Kesari, another ragging incident has surfaced at the medical institute. The accused medicos have confessed to committing the offence. Accordingly, they have been suspended from the medical college hostel until further orders and also from attending any classes. However, the suspended MBBS students have been allowed to appear for examinations.

The incident concerns an MBBS student pursuing the fourth year from the IGMC, who has accused four of his classmates staying at the hostel of beating him. It was further alleged that four students were drunk at the time of the incident.


In his complaint lodged with the Sadar police station, the victim student has stated that four of his classmates entered his room forcibly and assaulted him, causing him severe injuries. He has also accused the four students of ragging on which the Anti-Ragging Committee is now taking action. The committee has also recorded statements of four students.


Whether the students engaged in ragging or not, it would be revealed only through the investigation report of the Anti Ragging Committee. The daily reports that the four accused students themselves had admitted that they had beaten their classmate in a drunken state.


Thane In-Charge informed Punjab Kesari that on the basis of the complaint,a case has been registered under sections 452, 503 and 323 against the four. Further investigation of the case is in process.


When contacted, IGMC Principal Dr Ravi Sharma confirmed that four MBBS students have been suspended on the basis of assaulting an MBBS student in the medical college hostel. “These students will not be allowed to enter the hostel and college. We received a complaint letter from the victim's student via e-mail. In this letter, the student has accused of ragging. The anti-ragging committee has been scrutinized. At present the action is going on in the matter,” he added to his statement to Punjab Kesari.


Ragging menace seems to be rampant at the campus. Over a month ago, four second-year MBBS students have been suspended for ragging first-year medicos at a freshers’ party. In that case, the medical college administration had received an audio clip in a mail sent by an anonymous medico, in which the statements pertaining to the ragging of the MBBS freshers had been recorded.


On the basis of this clip, the college administration suspended the accused students with immediate effect and gave the matter to the police along with the clip showing the ragging menace. College administration has also written to the families of the accused MBBS students informing them of the said suspension of their wards.
