SHIMLA: A Professor in Department of Cardiology at IndiraGandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGGMC) Shimla, Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj, is this year's recipient of "Best e poster abstract' award in Seoul, South Korea. Dr Bhardwaj had presented a challenging case and a paper in the 'International Conference Trans Catheter Therapeutics Asia Pacific', held in Seoul.

The professor presented a paper on 'embolization of bone tumors' on 25 patients. He revealed that all patients ailing from bone tumors were admitted under Dr Vineet Aggrawal, Associate Professor, and Dr Ravi, Senior Resident Orthopedics.

Dr Bharadwaj said that in 12 patients, in order to decrease blood loss during surgery, embolization was done prior to the operations by Dr Aggrawal and Dr Ravi. Blood loss in these patients decreased phenomenally from an average of 1600 ml to 400 ml. In 13 cases, tumors were inoperable due to advanced bone cancer, Dr Bharadwaj added.

According to Dr. Bharadwaj embolization of feeding arteries was also done, as these patients were suffering from intense pain and the procedure helped decrease pain.

In a challenging case of Roshani Devi, who had undergone double valve replacement in Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital Shimla two years back, Dr. Bharadwaj, revealed that the patient had returned with heart failure, due to leakage of blood, around the aortic valve (Paravalvular leak).

Dr. Bharadwaj said that the case required surgery, but circumstance made an operation difficult, therefore , the defect was closed without doing a surgery. The patient was now fairing better and the effort was appreciated immensely, reports TOI.
