Hyderabad: Students demand change in state-level counseling sessions
Hyderabad: Medicos in the twin states are demanding a change in the schedule of state-level medical college counselling sessions, to be held in April. There single-fold demand is to hold the state counseling sessions after similar (counseling) sessions are over in the central varsities. At present, it has been scheduled one month prior to counseling in central medical universities.
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Jawaharlal Institute Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, and Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research are providing counseling session within May 08-22.
This news has been reported after the Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) is expected to once again hold the PG Medical Entrance Test (PGMET)-2016 admission counselling in April. This step has meet with medical students opposing the move as they have expressed their interest to hold these sessions after the counseling sessions end at central universities. As a result it has again caused mayhem, leading to disappointment for many state-level medical students seeking admission this year.
Dr G Ramesh, now a first year PG medico has implied on the issue that nothing was done by the varsity authorities to prevent the loss of over 200 convener quota seas last year. It was a result of students joining central institutes rather than their state PG medical seats.
As reported by TOI, "There is stiff competition for PG medical seats, especially for clinical courses. Hence, we requested authorities to postpone the PGMET-2016 admission process until the counselling for central institutes is complete, so that no seat gets wasted in the state medical colleges," said Dr G Srinivas, president, Telangana Junior Doctors' Association (TJUDA).
When contacted, Dr B Karunakar Reddy, vice-chancellor of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), while admitting to being aware of the problem, claimed he was helpless. "Though KNRUHS is a separate health varsity for Telangana, the admission matters are still handled by NTRUHS. Second, central medical institutes like AIIMS, JIPMER and PGIMER are autonomous institutes that conduct admissions twice a year unlike our annual admission process," said Dr Reddy.
