Trichy: Amidst tremendous stress owing to excessive workload and academic pressure, the medical students at KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College are facing a tough time at the institute’s campus.

Recently, demonstrating against certain edgy matters including lack of respect by fellow staff and non-availability of essential gear during patient treatment, over 50 MBBS doctors attached to the Interns and Postgraduates Association of Tamil Nadu (IPAT), at the Trichy- based Medical College staged a protest.

The medicos’ association alleged that a staff nurse had spoken to an MBBS intern in a disrespectful manner. In addition, they alleged that they were not being provided with essential equipment like gloves and syringes while treating patients. The medical college administration has been collecting Rs 1000 from the medical students with no reason given for the same, they added during the protest.

Sharing their dilemma, one of the PG medical students told TOI that the staff nurses have been speaking to MBBS interns and PG students in a humiliating manner and that they had taken the issue to the medical college administration prior to the protest.

“Only five days back, a staff nurse had spoken to one of the interns in a disrespectful manner. We had taken this issue to the medical college Dean back then. Only because it happened again, we staged a protest. We are regularly being subjected to humiliating treatment by staff nurses,” a member of IPAT association alleged while talking to TOI.

Without gloves, the doctors have the possibility of getting infected; emphasizing this fact, the protesters alleged that despite several requests, they were not being given gloves while treating patients and often got reply that gloves are out of stock. Same was the reason given when asked for syringes.

Further adding that Rs 1,000 is collected every month from them, the medical students’ association claimed that the medical college administration failed to present any clarification as to why the amount is being collected.

However, the Dean of KAPV Government Medical College Dr G Anitha said that the issue had been sorted out. Not commenting anything on the humiliation matter, the Dean claimed that there is enough stock of syringes and gloves and are being provided to the medical students.

On the issue of collecting Rs 1000 every month allegedly with no reason, the Dean clarified the medical college administration’s stance and stated, “The students were informed at the beginning itself that Rs 1,000 will be collected for building maintenance, electricity and water supply.”
