Human Rights Commission tells Health Department to review Sterilisation at TD Medical College Hospital

Alappuzha: Director, Health Department has been asked by the State Human Right Commission (KSHRC) to study the grievance regarding the Government TD Medical College Hospital ’s central sterilization department’s functioning. It is believed to have got affected by the common to and fro movement of bodies of people who have succumbed to the epidemic.


A 2 month time period has been granted to the Director by P. Mohandas, Member, KSHRC, through an order passed, that the Director of the Department of Health constitute a team of experts and submit a detailed report within this two-month time frame reported the Deccan Chronicle.


The Commission was looking into a complaint filed by K.N. Satyapalan, technician, Central sterilization department at MCH.


According to the complaint, besides the dead body movement, sterilization equipment was also being taken outside and brought to the operation theatre through the lift facility. ‘This kind of movement has posed threat to the security of patients', the complaint states.


Meanwhile, the MCH Superintendent in a counter affidavit refuted the allegation saying that sterilization equipment at MCH was capable of performing at high temperature. So infection could not spread. The same has been certified in the expert committee report', the superintendent has reaffirmed in his submission.


Meanwhile, the Commission revealed that the certification given by the expert committee regarding quality sterilization had yet to be submitted.
