Bhubaneswar: After receiving complaints from MBBS students alleging that Hi-Tech Medical College authorities are harassing them at the time of reporting by demanding an excess fee of Rs 11 lakh, the Odisha Health and Family Welfare Department has warned the medical college of strict action if they violate the government rules.

In its word of warning, the Odisha government has written an official letter to the medical college authorities stating that since the admission of the students is being done as per Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) guidelines, no private medical college can take any undertaking either from the students or their parents/guardians.

“If any such instance comes to the notice of the department, stringent action will be taken against the concerned medical college and if necessary, the government will cancel its NOC (No Objection Certificate),” the health department held.

Medical Dialogues has recently reported about the allegations after which an inquiry was ordered against the Hi-Tech Medical College for allegedly denying admission to MBBS students while seeking high fees.

The fees for the MBBS course in the private medical colleges set by the government were Rs 6.5 lakh. However, the medical institution allegedly demanded higher fees of Rs 11 lakh against the fixed fees from the MBBS students which held in gross violation of guidelines.

The medical college had recently seen an increase in the MBBS seats for which the management is allegedly demanding higher fees.

The medical college authorities had stated that a proposal was submitted a proposal to the OJEE in regard to the MBBS fee hike but it did not consider the proposal and so students will not be allowed to take admission in the institution.

This triggered resentment from the MBBS students as well as their parents who then approached the Health Department officials seeking immediate intervention in the MBBS admission row.

Considering the matter, the department has now issued a warning to the medical college in which it has clearly mentioned, “Allegations have been received from various quarters including parents regarding non-admission and non-acceptance of the reporting of the students by your institution who have already taken admission through OJEE.”

“It is further alleged that the institution is insisting on undertaking/bonds from the students/parents regarding the increase of fee structure,” the letter reads, as quoted by Odisha Suntimes.

The Institute shall abide by the fee structure, as decided by the Government. “Any violation of the above, will be treated as disobedience of Govt. orders, and if proved, this department will be compelled to withdraw the NOC/Essentiality Certificate issued to the Institution,” it added.
