Health Ministry relaxes land requirement for Establishing Medical College in Metropolitan cities

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released a public notice on its website informing about the relaxation in the requirement of land to establish a medical college in the Metropolitan areas.


Previously, there was a requirement of minimum 10 acres land in metropolitan areas to establish medical college .According to the health ministry, qualifying criteria but now it has been dispensed with and the requirement of land in metropolitan areas would be a unitary piece of land and no restrictions regarding the size of plot. The notice drew attention to the recent amendment made in the MCI's Establishment of Medical College Regulations, 1999 vide Gazette Notification dated 31.01.2017 whereby inserted 'Qualifying Criteria' under the Clause 2 (2) for providing relaxation in requirement of land to establish a medical college in the Metropolitan areas, defined in Article 243P (c)
of the Constitution of India.




As per the above notification, the existing requirement of minimum 10 acres land in metropolitan areas to establish medical college has been dispensed with and the requirement of land in metropolitan areas would be 'a unitary piece of land' and there are no restrictions provided as regards the size of plot. Further, the medical college should have the total built up area required for adequate infrastructure, including medical college, affiliated teaching hospital, residential quarters and other infrastructure required as per the applicable Minimum Standard Requirement Regulations and the built up area should be in conformity with the requirement of local urban laws and shall have approval of building plan from the competent authority.
