Health Minister updates parliament about regulating fee structure at private medical colleges

New Delhi: With questions being echoed in the winter session of the parliament demanding regulation of MBBS as well as PG medical fee structure at private medical colleges and deemed universities, the Minister of State for Health recently apprised the parliament about the same.

Through a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, MOS health answered how the Government is working on nitty gritties of regulating the fee structure of Indian private medical colleges and deemed universities eliminating the role of black money in medical education and making it accessible to all. The minister also informed how newly constituted National Medical Commission will ratify the proposal and methodology to regulate the fee structure in private medical colleges for which currently there is no provision in the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

" For the first time, a provision has been made, to regulate the fee structure of Indian private medical colleges and deemed universities, in the National Medical Commission Act, 2019," MOS Health, Ashwini Kumar Choubey stated.

" Clause (i) of Sub-section (1) of Section 10 of National Medical Commission Act, 2019 provides for framing of guidelines for determination of fees and all other charges in respect of fifty percent of seats in private medical institutions and deemed to be universities which are governed under the provisions of the Act," he informed

Informing about the current scenario on fee fixation, he informed that In the case of government medical colleges, the respective State governments are responsible for fixation of fee and in the case of private unaided medical colleges, the fee structure is decided by the Committee set up by the respective State Government under the Chairmanship of a retired High Court Judge in pursuance of the directions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. It is for the Committee to decide whether the fee proposed by an Institute is justified and the fee fixed by the Committee is binding on the Institute.
