Ahmedabad: Medical aspirants are now hopeful that with the removal of stay by the Gujarat High Court which was imposed on April 19, and the resumption of PG counselling for 1,428PG medical seats at Gandhinagar, things will begin to look up for them.

The Court stay has been removed based on the petition filed by the physically disabled and in service doctors, asking for 50% seats for diploma courses, as granted by the MCI, against the present sanction of 25%. The percentage issue of seat allotments was taken up in court on May 5.

The on going counselling process is to continue between 9 am and 4.30 pm at the GMERS Medical College in Gandhinagar till May 7. The number of seats for physically disabled and in-service doctors have yet to be declared by the Admission Committee for Professional Post-Graduate Medical Courses (ACPPGMC).

PG medical admission are held on basis of The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Postgraduate (NEET-PG) exam. The last exam was held between December 5 and December 13, 2016 which had a total of 1570 students qualify;711 from the Gujarat University and 859 from non Gujarat institutions.

PG admissions were ridden with controversy this year when 9 non-Gujarat University students challenged Gujarat University’s (GU) decision to give preference to its own students in the Gujarat High Court.

After the High Court cancelled their petition, they sought the Supreme Court intervention. The court based on the filed petition ordered that of the 50% quota – 25% be released on the basis of merit and the remaining 25% be based on university preference. The bench asked for the admission process to be completed by 31st may and put up the case for an August 9 hearing stating that the decision would remain subject to modification, reports Ahmedabad Mirror.
