The Gujarat government has reportedly taken a decision to pass an ordinance in favour of doing away with the NRI admissions in self-financed medical colleges. This would in other words means that 15% seats reserved in these colleges will no longer be open for NRI admission; if the ordinance is brought in order.

It will also mean that many local candidates in the state will benefit from the decision. It has been further highlighted in a media report that this 15% NRI quota will be converted into management quota seats, with a certain criteria. Only local candidates who are domicile of Gujarat and have completed their 12th standard from the state will be suitable to apply.

Health minister and government spokesperson Nitin Patel said to TOI that, "Ordinance to abolish NRI quota will be approved by the cabinet on Wednesday as majority of benefits was taken by non-Gujarati students from other states."

Patel said the quota will be converted to management quota seats. To ensure Gujarat students get maximum benefit, changes in rules for admission in management quota seats like student should be a domicile of Gujarat and should have passed Class 12 from the state would be made.

As reported by the medical dialogues team earlier also, the requirement to address the issue of NRI admission was being considered closely by the state government. The totals seats reserved in the state are 260 in different medical colleges.

“With NEET now made compulsory at the last minute, the NRI children will not be able to appear for the test. If it is mandated to give admission to NRIs only on basis of NRI score, many of them may not take admission in Gujarat and choose colleges in Russia, Philippines, China etc,” the dean of a leading medical college had said earlier to the press.
