Gujarat: ATS, DCB teams roped in to find clues on Patan doctor's abduction
Ahmadabad: Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) have been roped in four days after the alleged kidnapping of Dr Rajesh Mehta, a doctor of Patan Medical College (PMC).
Director General of Police (in-charge) P P Pandey said that “Teams of ATS and DCB have been instructed to help the local police crack the case.”
The police have not been able to trace the motive behind his abduction, as his family has not received any ransom call.
“There is no clue at all behind his abduction. We have checked all the possible angles,” said Deputy Inspector General, A K Jadeja, Border range IG, Bhuj, that has Banaskantha in its jurisdiction.
Jadeja has been camping in Banaskantha since Saturday. The police interrogation of family, friends & NGO’s associated with the abducted medical practitioner have given no clues. The abducted’s wife Hema who has been going to Banaskantha every day and has giving the police all possible information says, ‘I have received no ransom calls about his abduction.’
The police say that the student tiff with Mehta hasn’t resulted in any clues.
An NGO’s press release stated, “…The emerging overtones of the abduction allegedly being in retaliation by powerful forces for Dr Mehta having stood his ground against rampant corruption and wrongdoing in the medical college are a frightening commentary on the reducing space for law-abiding citizens in the state.”
Local police have denied loot angle, since Mehta’s car and other belongings were not touched and no extortion or threat calls have been received by his family. The police team that was sent to Rajasthan has returned with no clue.
Dr Shailesh Nagar, Dean of the PMC, said, “All I know is that he was abducted on the evening of August 19. I am here at the police station for the last three days, for cross verification of leads. Beyond that I know nothing.”
On Friday, doctor Rajesh Mehta, 56, left the college, run by Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society, to deliver a lecture at Deesa. On his way, about 4 to 5 persons stopped Mehta near Aseda village in Banaskantha, dragged him out of his car and taken him into the car belonging to the abductors. Mehta heads Department of Preventive and Social Medicine in the collage.

Reasons given for Dr. Mehta's suspected abduction at the time of abduction were assumed to be an argument with his medical students over attendance.
Mehta, a medicine scholar, was returning from the Deesa Rotary Club after delivering a lecture when he was picked up by the kidnappers.
According to police sources, the doctor was intercepted in Deesa, forced out of his vehicle and driven away. His shouts for help reached the villagers ears, after he had been driven away from the crime scene. The local villagers who gathered hearing his pleas for help, informed the police about the kidnapping immediately.
His mobile was recovered from his car by the police. His relatives in Patan were informed of his abduction from the same number .
