Kanpur: The 6 MBBS student suspensions, 3 each of GSVM Medical College's 2014 and 2015 batches respectively, on disciplinary grounds though alleged by juniors to be cases of ragging has created ripples in the institution.

Junior MBBS Students Manish Arya, Manoj Kumar Yadav and Avnish Kumar alleged that they were ragged by seniors Avneesh Kumar Singh, Mohammad Faizan, and Harshit Misra.

According to them, the seniors asked them to remove their clothes and refusals resulted in thrashings. They further confessed to have been made to clean utensils on December 4.

The incident resulted in them lodging an online complaint with the Medical Council, leading to the college getting into the action by forming a probe committee under RC Gupta, to look into the alleged incidents. However, the panel in its report surprisingly denied ragging charges and instead mentioned a student scuffle as the reason and cause of misbehaviour on both their parts.

“The committee, therefore, initiated action against the accused as well as the complainants and suspended all the six students and directed them to vacate the hostel,” said Dr Gupta to the HT. He further stated that the disciplinary action initiated was a result of the scuffle between the two groups.

Two other incidents, besides the present one, were witnessed at the institute this year. In 2017 October a junior doctor of the anaesthesia department had reported a case of ragging, at the hands of a senior.

November 10, witnessed the second incident, where a student complained of ragging by seniors and a teacher of the GSVM College.

Following these incidents, the Principal Navneet Kumar put a ban on all cultural festivities for 2 years at the college.
