Kanpur: Violence erupted at GSVM Medical College after the junior resident doctors attached to the institute’s surgical department allegedly created ruckus at the campus hostel in an inebriated state.

During their drunken bid, the junior resident doctors went to the Medical College's Boys Hostel and ragged the Post Graduate (PG) medicos. They allegedly dragged the PG medical (MD/MS) students out of their rooms, beat them brutally and push them off the stairs, hurting them severely. Some of the bikes and chairs were also broken by during the incident.

Oppressed, the PG students lodged a complaint with the University Grants Commission’s Anti Ragging Cell, who has sought inquiry report from the district magistrate, SSP and college administration, reports Jagran.

The incident happened on New Year’s Eve when the junior residents were partying. In their complaint, the medicos have stated that they had been ragged by the drunken doctors. Explaining the whole incident, the medicos stated that some of them slept on 31st December night, while some were studying in the rooms for the upcoming PG entrance examination. At around 1 o'clock late night, loud noises of abuses and chaos were heard.

Some junior resident doctors started knocking at the door of the hostels' rooms. As soon as the door opened, the resident doctors grabbed the collars of the PG students and began to beat them.

It has been alleged that the drunken doctors from the surgery department were accompanied by 15-20 junior residents who were looking for some students. One by one, they pulled out the students out of their rooms beating them and then threw them down from the stairs. All the students were seriously injured.

However, Dr GD Yadav, Proctor of GSVM Medical College denied any ragging menace. He told Jagran, “There was a New Year party on Monday night. After that a quarrel happened between Junior Resident and interns of the surgery department, there is no such thing as ragging. We have talked to the Head of the Surgery, but he is not available right now. However, after investigating the whole matter, strict action would be taken against the culprits.”

The medicos have further added that after the incident, two junior doctors allegedly threatened the medical students over phone stating that they would not let their internship be completed if they complained about this to anyone. Since then the students are terrorized and with their MD/MS exams just around the corner on 6th January, the students are concerned about their studies. A written complaint has been forwarded to the medical college Principal.

In addition, the medicos have alleged that the resident doctors misbehaved with the female students. They allegedly ask for their mobile numbers forcibly, if resisted, they start humiliating them. When they get their numbers, they allegedly text vulgar messages to female medicos, the students informed the media.

The Navbharat Times adds that the college administration has not given any information about the incident to the police yet.
