Kochi: A Rs 11 crore fund has been granted by the state government for developing Government Medical College, Ernakulum into a centre of excellence.

The sum has been allotted by the state authorities for the administrative block, and medical library renovations, along with the construction of multi-level car parking facility sewage system, drainage, isolation room complex, water treatment plant and multidisciplinary ICU.

The three-storey administrative block developed at the cost of Rs. 3 crore will host the ministerial staff room, college administrative committee meeting hall, and the principal’s office. Presently the library operates from a small room, which is not attached to the main building of the hospital. A full-fledged automated and air-conditioned medical library with most modern features is what is planned now.

“With the government granting administrative sanction, the PWD would be entrusted with the work. We will soon convene a meeting with PWD officials and prepare a schedule. We expect the work to be completed within one-and-a-half years,” said a Govt Medical College, Ernakulum official.

With communicable diseases being rampant and the college having only 2 isolation rooms there is a need for more.

The Rs 3-crore isolation room complex is meant to cover for the growing needs of the place. The Rs 50 lakh ultra-filtration treatment plant is expected to provide quality drinking water in the medical college.

Coordination has to be effective between different departments in order to provide effective treatment without delay and that is to be made possible by constructing a multi-disciplinary ICU complex with an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore reported TOI.

After the state's take over of the Govt Medical College, Ernakulam, footfall has increased to a 100%in the OPD, However, parking space continues to remain restricted.

The drainage system needs renovation with the old one going obsolete The pipes used for drainage are very thin and this makes smooth water flow difficult. The new drainage system is expected to resolve quickly. The sewage treatment plant to be constructed at the cost of Rs 4 crore will ensure scientific disposal of waste.

Rs 368 crore was allotted by the state authorities from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) for constructing super speciality block, mother and child centre, staff quarters, PG quarters and auditorium last year.

Another Rs 100 crore has been allotted again for other projects like cath lab and imaging centre.
