Government Medical College Assistant Professor suspended for his Facebook comments
AGARTALA: An Assistant Professor at Pharmacology department in Agartala Government Medical College, Dr Kaushik Chakraborty; has been suspended by the Tripura government for allegedly making offensive comments on Facebook regarding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
The suspension orders were issued by the Under Secretary to the government Anima Debbarma mentioning that a disciplinary proceeding was being contemplated against Dr Chakraborty and he cannot to leave Agartala without obtaining permission from the competent authority.
According to UNI report, the doctor's comments have allegedly offended the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who also holds the health portfolio.
It is to be mentioned that Dr Chakraborty is an avid protestor opposing the Citizenship amendment bill. After posting several comments on social media in protest, Dr Chakraborty drew major attention from the legislative authorities.
After Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb took charge of the health department, he made an oblique statement against the doctor where the CM asserted, "Doctor is appointed for treating patients not to write on NRC or CAB on Facebook."
Further, in August last year, Dr Chakraborty was issued show-cause notice by the Under Secretary. He was accused of obliquely criticizing the chief minister by posting derogatory remarks on social media, which was unbecoming of a public servant.
The notice also stated he had posted objectionable remarks on social media against CAB, which could create a rift among communities in the state.
The doctor, however, denied such charges against him. A few days later, Director Medical Education had served another ten days returnable notice along with snapshots of the doctor's posts, on the same charges demanding an explanation.
In his reply, the doctor explained his stance and stated that the referred posts were made on his personal capacity and not as a public servant and added that being a citizen of India he had the freedom to express his views on any issue.
Now recently finding the doctor's replies unsatisfactory, the state has suspended the doctor till further notice.
The Under Secretary to the government Debbarma put him under suspension stated that his replies were not satisfactory and reflected arrogance, as a result of which a disciplinary proceeding was being contemplated against Dr Chakraborty. He was directed not to leave Agartala without obtaining permission from the competent authority, reports UNI.
Medical Dialogues has recently reported that authorities at King George's Medical University (KGMU) have terminated the services of its Microbiology Department's Associate professor, who was arrested after his name configured in the MBBS admission fraud 5 years ago.
