GMCs Maharashtra to start classes by August 1 before NEET results are out

GMCs Maharashtra are reported to begin this academic session after concluding its first round on July 22. The classes are expected to start by August 1. The counseling rounds will begin today. Only the second round of classes are expected to start after Neet result will be announced by August 17. The news has been confirmed by the state's CET cell and DMER. The second round of admission will include private medical colleges, which will take into consideration the Neet scores of candidates.

Almost 1.42 lakh students took the MHT-CET, out of which only 40,000 seats are available for eligible students. 2,800 seats are available in GMCs.

Dr Pravin Shingare, Director of Medical Education, said to the media that "the institutes that have been participating in admission process conducted by the Government will continue doing so but for the courses other than MBBS and BDS. The admissions to MBBS and BDS courses will be done on the basis of score in NEET. The admissions to all seats of other private institutions and deemed university will be done on the basis of students' score in NEET."

Recently, MHCET ranks were announced and students were also awarded additional quota for sports and NCC. However, there are many parents who have expressed their unhappiness about the extra marks granted to 950 students.

In addition, the admission brochure shared by DMER and CET cell clearly mentions that the extra marks given to students will be verified during counseling. "If the additional weightage claim is found invalid, additional marks given to the candidate will be deducted and a revised state merit list number will be allotted to such a candidate later," the brochure stated.

However, a parent implied that since the deadline to declare the merit list is June 14, then how will CET cell make any changes in rank even if it finds discrepancies? It is better that any such matter is sorted out before the merit list is announced as per the SC deadline so that students are not left in the lurch. It will be a case of confusion as some ranks will go down and other will go up, based on the extra marks.

DMER director Pravin Shingare said to TOI that ranks of students whose scores are deducted will go down, and students next in the list will automatically go up. He said that process is followed every year. Shingare said the results of NEET will be declared on August 17. "A new schedule will be notified by the SC for admissions to colleges accepting NEET scores. State colleges will have to commence sessions before this, as academics will be affected," he said. He added that once students secure admissions in government colleges, they do not move to private colleges, so very few are likely to cancel admissions in the second round.
