Chandigarh: The Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 was visited by the Medical Council of India’s inspection team for an increase of 50 seats sanctioned in 2012.

According to Council norms, if any educational institute is allowed a seat increase in the first 5 years, annual inspections are carried out to check whether infrastructural and human resources up gradation in the college is happening.

According to the Director-Principal, Dr. AK Janmeja, the 2012 batch of students, would be appearing for the final exams this year. “The team had visited to oversee the arrangements,” said Dr. Janmeja.

The MCI’s sanctioned seat increase in 2012-13 faced many a hurdle. Initially, the MCI sanctioned seat increase for I year only, revoking its decision the next due to the college not being able to overcome its deficiencies.

The MCI decision was opposed which finally gave in to pressure and continued filling a mere 1oo seats.

In another incident , GMCH Sector 32 witnessed oxygen leakage in one of the pipes in the college. Panic spread in the college. The leak was noticed by workers carrying out maintenance work on campus. Some nurses had earlier, complained of fluctuation in the flow of oxygen.

Director-Principal, Dr. AK Janmeja, said that as soon as the authorities became aware of the snag, authorities got into action. “As a backup plan, we keep a parallel oxygen line. Soon after the snag was noticed, the other oxygen line was made operational,” Dr. Janmeja told the Tribune.
