Nagpur: The Guardian Minister, Chandrashekhar Bawankule's decision to fulfill his promise to provide Government Medical College Hospital(GMCH), with a grant of Rs. 25 crores, for 3 continuous years, has got Dean, Dr. Abhimmanyu Niswade into action. Dr. Niswade has decided to use the money in setting up an oxygen plant, a nuclear medicine unit, a robotic surgery section, a pediatric cardiology and also a clinical physiology unit at the hospital. The Minister announced his fund allocation decision at a meeting of the District Planning Committee (DPC).

The Gorakhpur deaths due to mismanagement and lack of facility seem to have shaken up the authorities and alerted the medical community. The District Planning Committee (DPC) has given a fund approval of Rs 50 crore for upgrading facilities at GMCH, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) and Daga Hospital.

The fund is to be spent in the coming two years, on the setting up of oxygen plants. The DPC has also approved a plan outlay of Rs 595 crore for the current financial year; with an additional Rs. 50 crore allocation granted for up gradation of facilities, at these three hospitals.

Dr Abhimanyu Niswade revealed, “The fund will be utilized for setting up of oxygen plant, Nuclear Medicine Centre, Preventive Cardiology Department, Endoscopy Robotic Surgery Centre among other facilities.

"At present, there is no facility for oxygen plant at any of the government hospitals in State. It will be the first time that such facility will be created at GMCH. At present, we have to spend Rs 2.50 crore to purchase oxygen from private agencies. With the addition of Trauma center, our requirement of oxygen has increased. Once the plant is installed, that much money would be saved. Moreover, in case of a surplus, we would be able to provide it to other GMCs too," he added.

“Same is the case with nuclear medicine. With the nuclear medicine, problems of endocrine, heart, cancer would be diagnosed earlier and accurately. This will help in improvement in treatment. Now, patients have to pay around Rs 1 lakh for getting investigated for nuclear medicine,” he informed the Hitavada.
