Malapuram: Government Medical College, Manjeri's 1st MBBS batch of 85 young doctors started their mandatory House Surgency on Sunday, making a dent in the otherwise existing paucity of doctors in the state.

Principal, Dr MP Shashi said the junior doctors will be posted in the Gynecology, ENT, General Medicine, Paediatric, and Orthopedic departments according to preferences,

The one-year long stint by house surgeons will reduce the overwork scenario for junior resident doctors at the hospital. Presently, the crowded footfall of patients is being attended to by resident doctors. A huge shortfall of resident doctors had occurred prior to the PG medical admission test; not to speak of the constant infrastructural deficiencies that the college faces.

The Casualty and Ward facilities are limited and meagre, like in the General Hospital. The shortage of space makes it difficult to accommodate house surgeons, with no facilities available for night stays reports Deccan Chronicle.

The house surgeons are expected to vacate the hostels for the next batch of students to come. According to the college authorities, hostel and staff quarter construction will begin soon. A budget of Rs 103 crore has already been sanctioned for development work in the college.
