Ernakulam : The Medical Council of India (MCI) conducted an inspection at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam on Monday to decide the fate of four postgraduate seats - two each in pathology and paediatrics at the medical college

An earlier inspection by the MCI of the government medical college had resulted in clearance in the three departments of microbiology, psychiatry, and medicine. During this inspection, however, the Council had also pointed out shortcomings in the department of paediatrics and had asked the college to file compliance for continuous recognition to the course.

The college authorities after its recent Council inspection has shown confidence that the department of paediatrics and pathology will clear MCI compliance and be given recognition unlike the other three.

The three departments whose recognition stands jeopardized have seven postgraduate seats at stake. These include three in medicine and two each in psychiatry and microbiology. In total there are 11 postgraduate seats in five departments.

Principal, Dr. V. K. Sreekala speaking to the Hindu revealed that there was no faculty shortage in the pathology wing and the government had now created more posts and facilities to accommodate the deficiencies pointed at in the earlier inspection. According to her the compliance for paediatrics was prepared accordingly.
