Kerala: Students of GMC Ernakulam have come forward to demand compensation from the state government for Shamna Tasneem, an MBBS student who recently passed away. It has been alleged the Shamna died as she was not provided proper medical treatment at MCH. Students say that Shamna's family be compensated monetarily and also, by providing a government job for a family member.

Shamna was a second year MBBS student, who was admitted to the MCH when she fell ill. She passed away after a wrong injection was given to her, allegedly by the doctor at the hospital. A condolence meeting was held recently where the students gathered.

The students also implied that the government cannot undermine that there is a lack of infrastructure and more facilities, at the hospital, which led to Shamna's untimely demise.

P G Jayasoorya, president, House Surgeons' Association implied that the association has put forward a request to the government, sharing their suggestions. The students have also expressed their wish to name a new cardiology block after Shamna.

Joint director of medical education Dr Sreekumari visited the medical college as part of the inquiry into Shamna's death. "She spoke to students, staff and faculty on the issue," said Dr V K Sreekala, principal of the medical college to TOI.

Meanwhile, Kalamassery Police, who registered a case on a petition filed by the father of the deceased, are yet to receive Shamna's autopsy report from Alappuzha Medical College. '' It is learnt that Alapuzha Medical College authorities are awaiting the results of certain tests. We hope to receive the postmortem report without delay once the Medical College obtains it,'' officials told the Express.
