Gandhi Medical College Medico Molestation case: Dean Dr Aruna Kumar tenders resignation

Bhopal: The Dean of Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Dr Aruna Kumar, who took charged of the post in December 2018 has put down her papers, after a protest by the junior doctors who demanded her resignation following an incident of robbery and molestation at the GMC girls hostel.


Confirmation to this effect has been given by OSD Dr Ajay Sharma to media persons, who stated that Dr Kumar, who is a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology had tendered her resignation to divisional commissioner Kalpana Shrivastava.


Dr Aruna Kumar had been appointed as the Dean of Gandhi Medical College (GMC) in the year 2018 as she replaced Dr M C Songara. Earlier, she held the post of head of Gynaecology Department in Gandhi Medical College.

The dean had come under fire from the medical students and junior doctor at Gandhi Medical College and associated Hamidia Hospital after a female medico was robbed and molested inside her own hostel room.

The medicos who had gone for a four day flash strike demanded resignation of both the dean as well as the hostel warden

After four days of strike and protest, the dean subsequently has resigned from her post stating, "We have to consider rules and regulation in an administrative process."


TOI reports that as Dr Kumar has resigned from the post, however, she expressed doubt over the incident.


"What happened was unfortunate, if it took place at all. There is some doubt. The situation is not good. I could not continue any longer and tendered my resignation from the post of GMC dean," Dr Kumar told TOI.


The protesting doctors under the Junior Doctors' Association (JUDA) called off the strike soon after. The doctors went on rigorous strike, burning effigy of GMC Dean pitching against the security lapse and demanding the dean to quit her post;





Meanwhile, the matter is still being probed and cops have detained a liftman in connection with medico's molestation and robbery case. During the investigation, the liftman denied knowing the medical student, however, as soon as he was presented before the victim, she identified him as the intruder, who entered into her room at GMC hostel, intimidated and molested her and made away with valuables.


As per a recent media report in The Free Press Journal, police will take further action after verifying the statements given by the liftman and the medico.
