Bhopal: The Gandhi Medical College is facing a stiff challenge at the hands of the Muslim Community, which is opposing the construction of the new building near the intensive care unit, claiming that the land in question belongs to the mosque.

Last year, nearing Ramzan, the situation had become so volatile that construction at the site was stopped and public works department had to request the district administration to resolve their differences with the Muslim community leaders. Though six months have elapsed since this conflict, construction has yet to be renewed.

Dr Sanjay Jain, PRO of GMC, talks between the Muslim leaders and the district administration have now to move towards a solution to the problem in order to facilitate construction of the main block of the new building. The Gandhi Medical College is in the process of converting the existing medical college into a new multi-specialty hospital with 2000 beds by 2019.

It is not the first time that the Gandhi Medical College is facing a challenge at the hands of the Muslim community. On an earlier occasion, it was served a legal notice for dumping mud and construction material near the Dost Mohammad Khan’s (the founder ruler) grave. Congress MLA, Arif Aquil had then blamed the College for encroachment on the grave premises reports Free Press Journal.
